Featured Interview with Phil O’Donnell

Phil O’Donnell, a Norton native, made his first trip to Nashville in 1983 and began developing his skills as a songwriter. Officially making the move in 1994, O’Donnell has also worked as a musician, playing with many country artists. O’Donnell’s songwriting credits include the #1 single, “Back When I Knew It All” recorded by Montgomery Gentry. He also has had songs cut by artists such as Mark Chestnut, Tracy Byrd, Rodney Atkins, Billy Ray Cyrus, Travis Tritt, Gretchen Wilson, and Randy Travis. In addition to having a successful career as a songwriter, O’Donnell also serves as producer. Among his many production credits is the six-week #1 country hit, “That’s What I Love About Sunday” (Craig Morgan), was one of the most played country song of 2005.

This panel discussion, will help provide the audience with a detailed look into the world of music synchronization from three different angles – music supervisor, sync placement/publishing company and composer/producer – to help NB artists and their teams gain valuable insight and tips into placing music in film, television, videogames, advertising, and how they can position themselves to participate in the emerging transmedia & branded content arenas.   The discussion will be candid, forward-thinking and will conclude with a Q&A for a chance to really get to know the panelists.

Glenn McMullen runs ECMA nominated music publishing and sync representation company Sound of Pop working with several NB artists including The Playdates, Andy Brown, In Dreams/The Arka Teks and more, working to place music into the variety of opportunities that exist. Music industry entrepreneurs – whether artists, promoters, or freelance journalists – must be clear about the business they want to build. Come prepared to work because participants will develop their own ideas into a vision and assess what they personally need to do to prepare to write a business plan.

L’auteur-compositeur est la matière première de l’industrie musicale. Grâce à ses paroles et ses mélodies peuvent exister compagnies de disques, interprètes, salles de spectacles, concours, etc. Mais quels sont la réalité économique de l’auteur-compositeur et les contrats qui peuvent lui être offerts? À quels services de protection a-t-il accès? Sébastien Charest, de la Société professionnelle des auteurs et compositeurs (SPACQ) viendra démystifier ces questions dans un premier temps.

Joëlle Bissonnette, de l’Association des professionnels de l’édition musicale (APEM), vous entretiendra ensuite d’édition, cette profession méconnue qui joue un rôle primordial dans le développement de la carrière de l’auteur-compositeur et dans l’exploitation, la promotion et la gestion de ses œuvres. On dit souvent que l’éditeur musical est à l’œuvre ce que le gérant est à l’artiste. Mais en quoi consistent les activités de l’éditeur musical? Quels services propose-t-il à l’auteur-compositeur? Quels types d’entente peut-on négocier avec lui? Cet atelier vous permettra de mieux comprendre cette profession millénaire et ses fonctions dans l’industrie de la musique.
